A method is described in which single particles of airborne dust are passed through the main beam of a gas laser and the resultant pulses in the intensity of the output beam of the laser are used as a measure of the size of the particles. It is shown how the size of an individual pulse is related to the light scattering properties of the particle and to the characteristics of the laser system.
