The definition of the particle extinction coefficient or efficiency factor, its behaviour according to the Mie theory and previous determinations of its value for spheres larger than the wavelength of light are briefly reviewed. Further measurements, of the extinction of monochromatic and white light by both monodisperse and polydisperse polystyrene spheres, are reported.
