A simple time-resolving vacuum ultraviolet spectrometer system has been constructed and its utility demonstrated through performance tests on the Hitachi Tokamak. The system consists of a Seya monochrometer and a 30-anode microchannel plate detector to provide simultaneous measurements over all anodes with a time resolution as short as 1 ms. Testing of the system is described; the total wavelength coverage is 40–130 nm with 0.37-nm spectral resolution; and the portion observable during a single plasma discharge has a bandwidth of 0.9 nm. The system has been calibrated by means of the atomic-branching-ratio method and is currently in operation as an impurity monitor.
