The use of computed tomographic (CT) body scanning in search of an unknown primary site in metastatic malignant neoplasms in 98 patients is reviewed. A clinically occult tumor was identified in 31 cases. This detection rate is three to four times that of "conventional" radiographic studies. We suggest that CT scanning is a valuable addition to the workup in selected cases of metastatic cancer of unknown origin. (JAMA1982;248:340-343)
