The morphological development of spherical Fe 3 O 4 aggregates has been investigated through a simple solvothermal process. Corresponding morphological transformation from solid spherical aggregates (resulting from the oriented aggregation of primary Fe 3 O 4 nanocrystal) to novel flowerlike particles with hollow interiors has been observed. This transformation can be ascribed to the cooperation of oriented aggregation and Ostwald ripening mechanisms. Magnetic investigation indicates these Fe 3 O 4 spheres present a superparamagnetic nature and can be adjustable as along their morphological variation. Moreover, these spherical particles were successfully aligned into one-dimensional necklacelike structures under an external magnetic field, displaying great potential in manipulation and organization of magnetic structures into integrated system.
