The quantum mechanical treatment of electron broadening as used by Kivel, Bloom, and Margenau is extended to include line shifts and is applied to the He i spectrum. The 3d→2p line is anomalous, since it has a small Stark shift and consequently a small Holtsmark broadening. For it the electron effects dominate. Comparison of this line's width and shape with others in the He i spectrum provides a simple experimental check on the theory.
