Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) is a common cause of lateral elbow pain. It is characterized as a degenerative tendinosis, predominantly within the origin of the extensor carpi radialis. Recent controlled trials have proved the benefit of nonoperative modalities (including activity modification, physical therapy, bracing, and injection) in initial treatment. Recalcitrant cases can be treated effectively in a majority of cases by surgical treatment, of which open debridement is the gold standard. The newer technique of arthroscopic debridement has shown favorable early clinical results.
