The catalytic preparation of a chiral alkyl bromide in which the chirality center is formed by asymmetric addition of BrCCl3 to a CC double bond was achieved in the presence of the chiral catalyst [(−)-diop]RhCl. This is the first example of an asymmetric catalytic reaction involving coupling of a C-halogen bond.
