The absolute Raman intensities as well as the depolarization ratios of the vibrational modes ν 1 , ν 2 , ν 4 and 2ν 4 of cyanogen in the gas phase are reported. These data are interpreted on the basis of the bond polarizability theory. From this interpretation it seems reasonable to assign localized CN bond polarizabilities to the cyanogen molecule.
