The incidence of Verbal IQ-Performance IQ discrepancies in subgroups of the WAIS-R standardization sample (N = 1880) was examined. The overall occurrence of large discrepancies was somewhat greater in subgroups with more years of formal education. In addition, the pattern of discrepancies appeared to be related to educational level. In the subgroups with fewer years of education, the incidence of discrepancies with higher Performance IQs was twice as common as that with higher Verbal IQs. The opposite pattern was observed in the subgroups with higher educational levels. Clinical implications were discussed.
