Pyrite slurry oxidation in the anode compartment of an electrolysis cell was observed to occur via an autocatalytic pathway. The rates of pyrite-assisted water electrolysis were enhanced by the addition of anionic mediators of Fe3+, Ce4+ and V5+. Electrolysis was conducted in acidic electrolytes at electrode potential less than that required for ordinary water electrolysis. A mathematical model for pyrite oxidation is proposed; the chemical rate constant is found to follow the expression: Activation energy of 22.3 kcal mol-1 is obtained for pyrite oxidation in 1 M H2SO4.
