Measurements of the electron energy distributions in Townsend discharges in hydrogen are described, in fair agreement with the theoretical work of Lucas (1966-69). The data were obtained for pressures of about 1 torr and for E/p 20 (field strength/pressure at 20 degrees C) varying from about 45 to 60 v cm -1 torr -1 .
