With each passing decade immunologic phenomena and their roles in medicine are being recognized and characterized at a rate that seems to be accelerating without limits. It hardly needs to be said again that they are involved in the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of all aspects of medicine, in a spectrum extending from immune deficiencies through normal homeostasis to hypersensitivity. Accordingly, one can envision a treatise on the immunologic aspects of disease as being practically unlimited in scope. The task of designing and generating such a work within reasonable limits was formidable enough when the first edition ofImmunological Diseaseswas published in 1965. How much more challenging the task must be today! That four editions have now been published is convincing evidence for the success of this work in coping with such formidable challenges.
