This paper examines the differences and similarities of the perspectives of 12 teachers and their pupils on a series of classroom lessons. Pupils and teachers were asked to comment, in written and oral form, on the positive aspects of the teaching that occurred in these lessons. Comparisons were made between the two perspectives at the level of the individual unit of work and across all units of work. The study was undertaken in a Scottish comprehensive school with fi rst year and second year pupils (Sl and S2).
