The paper attempts to throw some lights on the variability and the reliability of rainfall over the Sudan. Twenty stations are used to calculate the standard deviations and the coefficients of variations. The latter indices give a more realistic impression of the rainfall variability. Also an attempt is made to measure the reliability of rainfall as a means for determining the extent and the reliability of rain-cultivation in the country. The magnitude of the risk involved in the transitional areas is indicated by the percentage probability of receiving critical rainfall values.
