It is shown that the resonant electronic states of diatomic molecules, calculated adiabatically, cannot, in general, be degenerate, i.e. they cannot, for some internuclear separation R' , possess the same complex energy. The consequences of this for the dissociative attachment of electrons to heteronuclear diatomic molecules are discussed.
