The presence of this organism in the respiratory tract of patients free from acute respiratory infection and the infrequency of well-documented reports of H. influenzae pneumonia have led clinicians to disregard this organism in the etiology of acute respiratory illness in adults.A patient, W. S., admitted to the Cincinnati Veterans Administration Hospital in February, 1960, with bronchopneumonia andH. influenzaein his sputum stimulated us to investigate the possible etiologic significance of this organism in other patients with acute bronchopulmonary infections. The incidence, methods of diagnosis, pathogenesis, and...References1.
