By an indirect method the energy-loss rate of protons channeled along close-packed directions in single crystals has been determined. The dechanneling effect observed in Rutherford scattering and nuclear reaction yields has been used. The method has been applied to different close-packed axes in single crystals of CaF 2 and BaF 2 . Experimental values down to about 0.60 for the ratio of energy-loss rate in channel and random directions have been found.
