When pyruvic acid [14C]phenylhydrazone is in- jected, it is excreted in the urine largely as such (93 %) but partly as a-oxoglutaric acid phenyl- hydrazone (7 %). When administered orally it is hydrolysed in the gut and excreted in the urine as conjugated p-hydroxyphenylhydrazine (33 %) to- gether with the phenylhydrazones of pyruvic acid (31 %) and a-oxoglutaric acid (5 %). Similar results were obtained with oc-oxoglutaric acid [14C]phenylhydrazone.
