Diel Dissolved Oxygen Consumption and Total Ammonia Nitrogen Production by Fingerling Channel Catfish following Feeding at Different Times

Diel total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) production and dissolved oxygen (DO) consumption rates were characterized for fingerling channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) following a feeding at 0800 or 1600 hours. Mean hourly TAN production rates of channel catfish fed at 0800 hours ranged from 10.1 to 64.4 mg N/kg; rates for fingerlings fed at 1600 hours ranged from 8.9 to 105.4 mg N/kg. Hourly oxygen consumption averaged from 148.7 to 326 mg/kg for channel catfish fed at 0800 hours and from 295.8 to 462.0 mg/kg for fish fed at 1600 hours.
