A theoretical and historical overview of paraffin wax processing is presented. Processing effects chemical and physical changes in each step of the procedure, therefore appropriate choice of reagents and processing times can minimize microscopic artifacts. Solutions to processing problems are offered. (The J Histotechnol 16:71, 1992)
