Measurements of lifetime in static and cyclic bending tests were conducted on hot-pressed Si3N4 at 1200°C. The lifetimes in cyclic bending tests under constant loads were predicted by applying linear-elastic relations. These predictions underestimate the cyclic lifetimes. The deviations between predictions and measurements can be explained by the adhesive effects of the grain-boundary glass phase.
