Glutaraldehyde, in the presence or absence of sodium bicarbonate, caused an increase in the optical density of spheroplasts of Escherichia coli. The aldehyde, particularly at alkaline pH, prevented lysis of spheroplasts when these were suddenly exposed to a hypotonic environment. It is proposed that the stabilization which occurs results from the crosslinking activity of glutaraldehyde on the cell envelope of E. coli.
