An analysis of Brillouin amplifiers (BA) for use in self‐homodyne detection is given considering the pump depletion and the frequency dependence terms. Numerical calculated results shows that operating a BA in the saturated region will give better performance than in the linear region, and the most economic fiber length and pump power can be selected to obtain optimum characteristics of BA.
