This paper reviews the requirements for mcurete photometric assessment of optical images, particularly at very low light levels, and identifies ‘detective quantum efficiency’ 88 an important figure of merit for detector performance. The construction and principles of operation of several of the more common types of image intensifier are described, together with related devices such as television camera tubes and solid-state detectors. Examples of several of the more demanding applications of intensifier systems are given; these include medical radiography, optical and ultraviolet astronomy, field ion microscopy and high speed photography.
