Several combinations of magnetic cusps and mirrors are evaluated for their ability to contain cold plasma. Plasma noise, density, and decay time are measured. The plasma is considered stable if its loss rate is not greater than that permitted by multiple scattering. The cusp field with its annulus bent by adding axially parallel uniform field gave optimum containment. A plasma containing electrons at 25 to 130 keV temperature was found to be stable in a simple magnetic mirror configuration.
