Asperthecin, C15H1008, the polyhydroxyanthra- quinone derived from A8pergiUlw quadrilineatua Thom & Raper, was first isolated by Howard & Raistrick (1955). They prepared various deriva- tives and advanced a partial structure based on emodin. As a result of further degradative work by Neelakantan, Pocker & Raistrick (1957), the structure of asperthecin was reduced to two possibilities, (I) and (II), but the evidence was in- sufficient to determine which was correct.
