An estimating equation was derived for red alder ( Alnus rubra Bong.), expressing ratio of squared upper stem d.i.b. to squared dbh outside bark as a function of dbh, total height, and the 3/2, 3rd, 32nd, and 40th powers of relative height. This equation formed the basis for a system of tables and equations which provides estimates of tree volume for various combinations of product units, utilization limits, and size classes of material. The methods used should also be applicable to other species.
