The calculation of the magnetic neutron cross section is discussed for transition metal compounds and the general formulae are used to calculate cross-sections for three compounds of current interest. Scattering from V 2 O 3 is shown to be highly anisotropic and indicative of a widely spread moment distribution, given the ground state wavefunction proposed by Rubenstein (1970). Detailed calculations are given also for FeF 2 and FeCO 3 , and it is shown that the aspherical moment distribution induced by the crystal field contributes to the scattering at the nominally purely nuclear Bragg reflections. The magnetic contribution at all other Bragg peaks is dominated by the spherical moment distribution. Consequently the spherical and aspherical components can be measured in detail using polarized neutrons although the observed moment will also contain covalent contributions, which are not included in the present calculations.
