Rats dosed with crotyl phosphate, crotyl alcohol or crotonaldehyde excrete 3-hydroxy-1-methylpropylmercapturic acid, and occasionally smaller quantities of 2-carboxy-1-methylethylmercapturic acid.2. Evidence is presented that these metabolites are formed from the ester and alcohol only after these compounds have been converted to crotonaldehyde.3. The synthesis of barium crotyl phosphate, S-(3-hydroxy-1-methylpropyl)-L-cysteine, S-(3-hydroxy-1-methylpropyl)-glutathione and of the dicyclohexyl-ammonium salts of 3-hydroxy-1-methylpropyl-, 2-carboxy-1-methylethyl-, 2-ethoxycarbonyl-1-methylethyl- and crotyl-mercapturic acid is described.
