River maintenance, involving vegetation control and channel clearance, is carried out to facilitate flood alleviation and land drainage; increasingly there is a need to justify this expenditure against the benefits obtained. This paper presents the results of a study which was carried out to assess the economic performance of river maintenance on selected rural sites in England and Wales. The evaluation methods have been simplified to provide standard data and routines for river maintenance justification in the form of guidelines, elements of which have been incorporated into‘flood defence management system’methodology.
