Insertion device sources of circularly polarized radiation with the capability of switching rapidly between right- and left-handed polarization are considered and two schemes are put forward: a ‘‘modulated asymmetric wiggler’’ and an electromagnetic elliptical wiggler. Recent studies of these devices and of the alternative crossed-undulator scheme are summarized, and their expected performance compared in ELETTRA. The optimum choice for a broadband, high flux source is an electromagnetic elliptical wiggler. Design parameters for a device with the potential of reaching a switching rate of 100 Hz are presented.
