Calculations have been performed to find the optimum thickness for a transparent gallium arsenide photocathode mounted on a sapphire substrate. The performances of other semiconductors with band-gaps as low as 1·0 eV have also been compared with GaAs. The behaviour of such surfaces under starlight and moonlight conditions is also calculated.
