The factors affecting the equilibrium of charged powder particles deposited on an insulating dielectric carrying a superficial distribution of charge have been investigated and charts are presented from which the width of the unstable zone can be predicted for point, line and plane charge distributions. The mottled appearance of images formed by avalanche amplification in an image-forming ionization chamber can be explained by these artefacts.
