The role of metal ion chemistry in the atmosphere is briefly reviewed. The available relevant thermal energy binary and three‐body reaction rate data are tabulated. The importance of a two‐step hydration of metal ions is pointed out, first three‐body association of metal ions to CO 2 (or possibly O 2 or N 2 ) followed by a fast binary ‘switching’ reaction, M + ·CO 2 + H 2 O → M + ·H 2 O + CO 2 which should be particularly effective for metal ion loss in the D region.
