A study has been made of the growth and morphology of Si3N4 dendrites obtained by rapid condensation of high-temperature ultrasuper-saturated gas generated from amorphous silicon nitride (Si3N4) powder using a cylindrically converging shock wave technique. The obtained dendrites were an α modification (rhombohedral structure), a β modification (hexagonal structure), and an aggregate consisting of α and β modifications. The morphology and crystal structures of the dendrites suggested that they grew rapidly via vapour → solid process or vapour→liquid→solid process in free space.
