SummaryThe results of experiments are reviewed which indicate that the most important time for broiler breeder hens to consume calcium is in the late afternoon at the initiation of shell calcification. A mechanism responsible for the influence of time of calcium intake on shell quality is suggested. The research data in this review also suggest that the current practice of early morning feed restriction to broiler breeder hens is not the best method of feeding to obtain maximum shell quality and should be re-evaluated.
