The modified Rayleigh equation is a non‐linear differential equation governing the growth of bubbles during cavitation. It has been programmed on an analog computer, and the effects on the growth of bubbles of the initial conditions and the physical properties of the system, such as density, viscosity and surface tension, have been made the subject of a detailed parameter study. The observations that the initial growth may be delayed and that the rate of bubble growth may pass through a minimum have been explained by an energy balance. A first order perturbation method has been applied to the case where the effect of viscosity is small.
