A novel means of measuring particle velocities in spouted beds using laser‐doppler anemometry (L.D.A.) is described. L.D.A. is applied mainly in a back‐scatter mode to the spout and fountain of a half‐section bed. The fountain of a three dimensional bed can also be studied. L.D.A. is shown to be a powerful tool for measuring particle velocities in spouted beds. Statistically significant quantities of data are obtained with much higher resolution and in time scales orders of magnitude lower than with previous techniques. Previously unresolved aspects of particle motion, including wall effects in half‐section beds, can be quantified.
