Experiments on the application of the fluidized bed technique to the chlorination of sewage gas methane are described and the feasibility of this method for maintaining easy control over the reaction is demonstrated. Activated carbon, pumice and cupric chloride on pumice have been used as catalysts in the fluidized bed, and their performance evaluated compared with that of sand, a non‐catalytic inert. The influence on the reaction of the carbon deposited during chlorination has been investigated. Based on chlorine, yields of carbon tetrachloride up to almost 90% of the theoretical were obtained.
