The domain structure of garnets is observed in polarized light with the colloid technique. The stray fields from the garnet render the colloid birefringent which leads to interesting new possibilities in domain studies. In particular the topological formation of the domain structure is clearly revealed. The technique can also be used for distinguishing ion implanted regions. A simple theory enderlying the birefringent contrast is presented.
