As a neurosurgical method to reduce spasticity in cerebral palsy, Peacock and Arens brought posterior rootlet rhizotomy from South Africa to California about 1985.' The procedure fell on fertile ground in the United States and spread to at least 30 medical centres in the 50 states from Arkansas to Washington.5 In addition, several centres in Canada offer the operation.
