Time-resolved photoluminescence excitation (TREX) spectra of XeF2 (1%) in solid Kr and Xe were obtained by exciting with synchrotron radiation in the VUV region. The emission was due to XeF photofragments in the D and B excited states. The TREX data thus provide the first relative photodissociation yield measurements on XeF2 as a function of exciting photon energy. In addition, cage forces in solid Kr and Xe sufficiently modify one of the excited state potential surfaces to permit observation of a new band system in XeF2 which has been tentatively identified as an allowed 1Πu←1Σg transition. In solid Kr, the bands are located at 7.88, 8.07, 8.25, 8.44, 8.61, and 8.77 eV. Observation of these bands in TREX spectra provides substantial support for the linear triatomic dissociation models recently proposed by Heller and Pack.
