In this paper the optimization of echelle spectrographs for use with image dissector tubes is discussed. With all degrees of freedom in the choice of design parameters a rule for the optimization is given. It is also shown that there is a need for high-resolution image dissector tubes with larger photocathodes than those of the tubes available at present
