Configuration interaction and the stabilisation method are used to compute potential energy curves for the resonant states of HF - , an important example of electron-polar-molecule scattering. Shape and core-excited resonances up to 14 eV are considered and the results are compared with previous theoretical results for HCl - and the available experimental data for HF - . These curves provide an interpretation of the known experimental observations on this system and suggest a number of further experiments which would provide a critical test of this picture.
