The vacuum fluctuations of the electric field will shift the energy levels of an atom near a neutral, conducting plate. We have calculated these shifts in Rydberg atoms. The results of Casimir and Polder are recovered in the limit where one ignores any permanent dipole moment in the atom. Numerical values for the shifts of the lowest levels are given.
