The intensity correlation function for an extended incoherent source seen through strong turbulence is worked out assuming that the intensity randomization U ≫ 1. The scintillation index is found as a function of source angular size θ 0 , path length z , wave number k , strength of turbulence A , and slope of the assumed power law turbulence spectrum α (α = 11/3 for the Kolmogoroff case). The scintillation index drops to about 0.5 when A k 2 Z α θ 0 α−2 ≈ 1.
