We present a special issue of the International Journal of Control on iterative learning control (ILC).The papers included in this issue were solicited through a call for papers announced in the e-letter and at the Iterative L earning Control W orkshop and Roundtable, a two-day meeting of twenty-eight ILC researchers who met immediately preceding the December 1998 IEEE Conference on Decision and Control in Tampa, Florida. In the remainder of this introduction we set the stage for the special issue by describing the ILC concept, presenting a formulation of the ILC problem and discussing the background of ILC.We conclude with a brief description of each paper in this issue.
