A model of magnetostriction of ferromagnetic polycrystalline sheet has been devised based on the orientation distribution of the crystals and the domain theory of magnetization. Comparison with experimental data for silicon iron shows that the model gives a good numerical agreement at a flux density of 15 000 gauss and a good qualitative description of the dependence of magnetostriction on flux density. It shows also that magnetostriction is sensitive to the preferred orientation of the material and that variations in measured magnetostriction are largely attributable to differences in the orientation distribution.
