An overview of spatial frequency filtering methods using interference phenomena is presented. The conceptual relation between the various known works pertaining to this category is stressed and the conditions to be fulfilled to perform such a filtering are given. Improved luminosity can be obtained through compensation; a theory of compensation in these circumstances leads to a complete specification of useable interferometers.
